Bush invokes Comparison of Iraq with Vietnam
To those who would invoke comparisons of the aftermath of Vietnam to the potential of what may happen if we leave Iraq “too soon”, I say this. Yes, the aftermath of Vietnam was ugly. Because of that ugliness, much time and effort was put into setting up rules of engagement for when and under what circumstances the United States would become involved in foreign conflicts. These rules, first laid out by then Secretary of Defense Casper Weinberger, were honed by Gen Colin Powell into what became known as the Powell Doctrine. These rules were developed and used because those in power knew how those who had not used those rules in Vietnam were judged by history. They had no desire to suffer the same harsh judgment.
So, if you worry how history will judge America if it leaves Iraq too soon, then my initial reaction is to ask, “Why didn’t you think about that before you went there in the first place?”
And now the question we all have to face is this.
Are we willing to invest more blood and treasure to save the face of someone who does not deserve to have their face saved? Or will we have to hold our nose and take a bite anyway, because the consequences are worse than we can endure?
What do you think?
