The Big Stories Today Are Gonzalez and Craig--Or Are They?

The Big Stories Today are Gonzalez and Craig—Or Are They?
OK, so I go away for a couple of days and suddenly two big stories emerge. Attorney General Alberto Gonzalez resigns and Senator Larry Craig of Idaho is convicted of behavior that indicates he is a homosexual. What makes the latter especially newsworthy is his hostility to all things homosexual. So once again, we have another example of the hypocrisy of politicians. This one happens to be Republican, but the Democrats have had and will have their share, too. What goes around, comes around.
All this is an illustration of what we have been saying on this site for some time. This is another example of inconsistent behavior; of do-as-I-say-not-as-I-do leadership that I would hope most of us are sick of. Isn’t what we really want honesty and consistency in what our leaders say and do?
In a sense, there has been consistency. The baser instincts of voter emotions have been used to distract us. Just as the sleight of hand magician gets us to look elsewhere so “magic” can be performed, we have allowed politicians to use social issues like gay rights and abortions and unreasoned fear of terrorism to distract us from watching the fiscal welfare of our country.
So it is that I remain consistent to one of my themes. This is a theme first coined during the Watergate era, but it remains as true today as it was then. Follow the money. To that end here is an article from the Common Dreams web site which should be of concern to us all.
Here’s the link to How the Bush Administration Is Turning the USA into a SubPrime Borrower.
