Op-Ed by James Dobson and the Link with the Oral Roberts U Scandal

Just below is a link with someone else’s analysis of the recent Op-Ed written by James Dobson for the NY Times. The Op-Ed is intended to provide Dobson’s version of what happened at a recent meeting of leading Evangelicals in Salt Lake City.

One thing I will comment on myself. Dobson writes that, “The purpose of the gathering was to discuss our response if both the Democratic and Republican Parties nominate standard-bearers who are supportive of abortion.”

I think “supportive of abortion” is revealing of Dobson’s mindset. This phrase implies that certain Presidential candidates support increases in the numbers of abortion. The phrase implies the thought that abortions, like the number of college graduates or the production of some sort of widget, should be encouraged.

There is a difference between this implied point of view and favoring the continuation of the legal option of abortion as a last resort to an unhappy situation. Similarly, there is a difference in seeing the world strictly in black and white terms and seeing the world as a place inhabited by flawed human beings who (despite their best efforts) sometimes make mistakes they did not intend to make.

As I said in an earlier post, I think Dobson’s (and others like him) fear is that he will be robbed of an issue that brings in a great deal of revenue for his organization. As we have seen in recent revelations concerning Oral Roberts University, all may not be as it seems on the surface with these types of organizations and their use of funds. Here’s an Oral Roberts link.

And here is the Dobson link.
