Giuliani Gains Endorsement of Pat Robertson
An announcement was made today that evangelist Pat Robertson has endorsed the candidacy of Rudy Giuliani for President of the United States.
The official explanation of the endorsement was Robertson’s conclusion that Giuliani was the best qualified candidate to confront Islamic Extremism. Surprise was expressed in some quarters that Robertson would endorse someone who officially has a moderate position towards abortion and gay rights.
To me, there was little surprise. Another blog had already noted (and I pointed to) the contradiction between Giuliani’s claim of moderation and his promise to appoint strict constructionist judges to Federal positions. Put plainly, what Giuliani is doing is an attempt to have his cake and eat it, too. He hopes to appeal to moderates by claiming a moderate position. Once in office, however, he will hand the keys to the kingdom to judges who will do his dirty work for him. Talk about sleight of hand.
Do we really want to elect someone as President who would manipulate us with such a deception?
Once again, let me state my thoughts. I am not for trying to increase abortions. I am for trying to decrease abortions. Neither am I for outlawing abortion. Those of you who are rational thinkers need to realize the threat the anti-abortion, anti-gay crowd poses to your own personal liberty and the ability to control your personal destiny with regard to you and the people you love.
I was on the radio yesterday with Mary Ann Popp and we talked about this. Mary Ann said this issue will never go away. That’s probably true, but we can make it go away as a political issue. We can make it go away in the same way that Prohibition was made to go away. Once an issue is shown to be a non-starter at the ballot box, it will go away.
Today there are still people who object to the sale and consumption of alcoholic beverages. The fact is, however, is that in the vast majority of this country those people must content themselves with drunken driving laws as a deterrent to those activities. They know, like it or not, that Prohibition is a dead issue.
We will truly begin to make progress on social tolerance in this country when we relegate abortion, gay marriage, and stem cell research to the same status as Prohibition.
Polls indicate that my position is a majority belief in this country. It’s time the majority asserts itself and puts this issue to rest.
