Mike Huckabee on Larry King

Interesting Interview with Mike Huckabee on Larry King tonight (12/17/07).

Some of the highlights for me included (of course I'm paraphrasing what I remember of what was said):

Huckabee believes we need more music and arts instructions in our schools to teach children to think creatively. He's for math and science instruction, but thinks we need to teach kids to use the knowledge they're given.

He has great comebacks for explaining some of the negative comments or activities attributed to him by his opponents. Chuck Norris said he had told Huckabee that he could expect the negativity once he was perceived as a threat to Romney and Giuliani. That's a forecast that's coming true.

Huckabee stated that the religious beliefs you hold don't matter so much as whether the behavior you exhibit is consistent with the beliefs you profess. That's something I can agree with. We've spoken often here about why consistency is one of the counters to polarized politics.

Asked about his comment on the Bush Administration's "bunker mentality" towards foreign policy, Huckabee had this reply. Huckabee said he believed once the decision is made to go to war and the objectives are met, then the nation should go to war in accordance with the Powell Doctrine (which means going in with overwhelming force and a clear plan on when and how to leave.) That's all good as far as it goes. What I would like to ask Huckabee is this.

You're contemplating going to war with another country. Your generals tell you the number of troops needed is twice what you have in uniform today. Would you go to war without the required number of troops and try to hide the fact by contracting outrageously expensive mercenaries? Or would you level with the American people about the needed manpower requirement and expand the military--even if doing so required a return to a Draft?
