Huckabee's Proposed Constitutional Amendments

This story broke a couple of days ago, but we had enough other things going on that we are only now getting to it.

In a meeting with his supporters in Michigan, Governor Huckabee called for two constitutional amendments. One would declare that life begins at conception and the other would be that marriage is between a man and a woman. Huckabee stated he thought it would be easier to change the Constitution than to change God's standards.

If you're a Republican, you need to face the reality that you have a Theocratic tiger by the tail. You have a major component of your party's membership who are advocating the transformation of the US Government into a theocracy. If you're in the Republican party because you're a libertarian or a business person advocating small government, limited regulation, free markets, and a robust national defense that would defend those markets, then you have a real problem.  Republicans brought these Theocrats into the fold with a wink and a nod in hopes that they would give you the electoral numbers you needed to gain power. That happened, but (in what seems to be a theme in your party the last few years) you failed to assess the long-term consequences of short term actions. Now they are demanding to have a candidate who will actually deliver on their theocratic demands. Truth be told, you don't like those kind of demands any more than the so-called liberals do. What to do now? Your choices are limited.

You can engage in an internal battle to nominate a more moderate candidate. You can try to cast this element from your midst (good luck). Or Republicans can split off and form a third party. Short term, the first option is what is being tried now. Long term, especially if Republicans lose badly in 2008, option 3 may be best.

If you're a Democrat, then don't hurt yourself trying to pat yourself on the back. You've got some groups associated with you (Code Pink comes to mind) that are just as hurtful. So far, their camel's nose isn't far enough under the tent to cause you real damage. Do what you have to do now to keep those groups at bay so you don't end up like the Republicans.

If you're an Independent, then this is more evidence of what I have told you before should guide your voting decision. Do not reward bad behavior. Do not give Republicans (and therefore theocrats) continued access to the inner sanctum of power.

Here's a link to an article with the details about Huckabee's proposals.

I agree 100% with this article. Why can't we have a candidate who respects our freedom? I believe in freedom of religion, civil rights, women's rights and the right to keep my paycheck (not hand it over to the IRS). Guns don't kill people, people do. Human *life* does not begin at conception and marriage, in the eyes of the state, is a civil union - not a spiritual contract with God (leave that rhetoric at church).

On the Demise of the GOP

I consider myself to be a moderate conservative. I would like to be included in the moderate center opposing polarized politics.

One thing I would say to my liberal friends. You are making a mistake if you underestimate the GOP. They are not stupid and they are not a monolithic herd. Most have the courage of their convictions. Many have significant resources.
In my opinion, the one thing that could unite the GOP is if the Democrats nominate Senator Clinton. If you read or watch or listen to mostly left wing sources, you may not appreciate the depth of opposition to her. Social conservatives, people who believe there is a Islamic threat and we need to do something about it, big and small business, and traditional economic conservatives all will unite for whichever candidate against Ms. Clinton. Just my opinion.

Jim, you're preaching to the choir here. I am on record that Mrs. Clinton is a very poor and polarizing candidate for the democrats. I intend to write an entry about it in a day or two. I'll base it around this question to the Democrats. Which is more important to you: breaking the race or gender barrier or actually winning the election? After today's activity in South Carolina and McCain's success, Democrats need to realize they need to nominate someone who can compete on National Defense. That is definitely not Mrs. Clinton.

I think for some, republicanism meant simply the lack of a monarchy, whilst for others monarchy was compatible with republicanism.
