A Message for 2008's Super Tuesday Elections and Beyond

What Kind of Future Do You Want for You and Your Loved Ones?

Welcome to my new Weekly Ezine. I hope you like it and will share it with your friends.

On the eve of Super Tuesday, I hope you are prepared to participate. Even if you are not in one of the states voting, your candidate needs your support. A small contribution may not seem like much, but if 1,000 people send a candidate $25, then they will have $25,000 to work with. Right now you have a choice. Consider this: when the voting started January 3, there were 16 Democratic and Republican candidates for President. Now we are down to 5 competitive candidates. Soon there will be only two candidates. If you want a choice, then now is the time to speak up.

My desire for you is to have two goals this election year. The first, naturally, is to choose leaders who will guide us into the future with wisdom and vision. This will be a choice made even more difficult by the polarization of our processes. That leads to my second goal. The time has come for us to stop complaining about the difficulty of making our voting choices and the ineffectiveness of our government. It’s time, instead, to do something about it. Let’s talk about those two goals.

Choosing who to vote for will become easier when the majority of us learn to re-focus from the issues and personalities orientation we have now. Instead, we need to develop a focus on principles and outcomes. When you have an issues and personalities orientation, you are playing the game the way the politicians and media want you to play. You are like someone trying to sail a sailboat without knowing how to set the sail or hold the rudder. You’re going to be blown around by the continually changing wind of all the issues the 24/7/365 news cycle produces. When you develop a focus on principles and outcomes you also develop a resistance to “spin” and manipulation. I’m trying to help you develop that revised focus through my Blog, my book, my public appearances and my web site (where you will find recommended books by other authors highlighted).

Just changing your orientation will not be enough. Part of the reason we have polarized politics are systemic flaws in our electoral process. These flaws enable polarized politics to exist. Polarized politics, in turn, is strangling the ability of our government to find solutions to the problems we face as a nation. These problems, like an infection untreated, are threatening the continuation of our health as a nation. Work this thought process back in reverse. If we want to solve our problems, then we must resolve polarized politics. If we want to resolve polarized politics, then we must address the reasons polarized politics exists, including the systemic flaws in our electoral process.

Another reason polarized politics exists lies in the nature of the goals for some political groups. Those goals are intended to get business done which should not be done by government and/or fail to address the negative ripple effects of their proposed solution. Many of these are thorny social issues advocated by a minority, just as Prohibition was. Those types of issues will be resolved in the same way Prohibition was resolved. The majority of Americans finally spoke up for sane and logical solutions and took Prohibition away as a political issue.

Edward Deming, the father of modern statistical control methods in manufacturing and Total Quality, used to have an exercise in his seminars that emphasized two things. First, you can exhort and talk all you want. You will never get a different result to what you’re doing until you change the system itself. Further, you can never change the system until you drive fear out of the organization to the point you are willing to talk honestly about the system and how it works.

Please join me in that kind of dialogue about our political system. I hope you will not only continue receiving these Ezines, but forward them and ask your friends and family to join in as well. (Subscription is available at our web site at www.KindredMindsEnt.com).

One thing I will absolutely guarantee. If you do nothing, then nothing will change and polarized politics will continue to steal the future from you and the people you love. But, to paraphrase Jim Rohn, if each of us will change, then everything will change for us.

Regards,

Larry
