What Wisconsin's Numbers Mean

Before I talk about the Wisconsin numbers, allow me to offer you a preview on an article I will be writing. All through 2007 my research led me to believe that one of two things would happen with the 43% of voters who were so disgusted by Democrats and Republicans they called themselves Independents. Whichever one it was had the potential to completely change the political landscape in this country for a very long time. Obama is making one of those two things happen.

What's more, the sales professional in me sees how he is making that happen. Let me reassure you. He is not manipulating you. You are not being conned. I will show you what I mean in a future entry.

Let's talk Wisconsin numbers--and they are some amazing numbers. I got them from MSNBC's web site.

First, remember this. In 2000 and 2004, Gore and Kerry barely carried this state for the Democrats. Now look at last night's numbers.

Democrats  |  Polls | County Results
Candidate Votes % of votes Delegates won
Obama 645,554 58% 40
Clinton 452,590 41% 28
Uninstructed 860 0%
99% of precincts reporting
Republicans  |  Polls | County Results
Candidate Votes % of votes Delegates won
McCain 224,122 55% 35
Huckabee 151,114 37% 0
Paul 19,129 5% 0
Romney 8,083 2% 0
Uninstructed 852 0%

McCain and Huckabee's combined total is 375,236. The two of them together would lose to Hillary Clinton in a general election. The Republican grand total (including Uninstructed) is 403,300. Again, all Republicans combined would have lost to Hillary Clinton had this been a general election. The number of people who voted Democratic yesterday was a total of 1,099,004. If one assumes that those who voted Democratic will vote Democratic in the general election and that those who show up for the general election vote (who did not vote in the primaries) vote in the same proportion, then Republicans are headed for a thrashing in November.

Why are the numbers skewing this way? Well, that's what I will write about in the next few days. Stay tuned.
