NY Times: Iraqi Offensive Revives Debate for Campaigns

Excellent summary of the impact of the recent Iraqi offensive on the positions of all three Presidential campaigns.

Among the sources quoted is Dennis Ross, a skilled diplomat who served both the Bush I and Clinton administrations and author of Statecraft and How to Restore America's Standing in the World. I listened to Ross speak to the Commonwealth Club in California about his book and his arguments were compelling. Here's a quick link if you want to check out the book.

    On the current Iraqi Offensive

My thumbnail take on this is: McCain looks good if the U.S. and Iraqi governments succeed. Clinton and Obama look good if the U.S. and Iraqi governments fail in this effort. I know which side I am rooting for.

Better yet, how about if we just wait to see how it plays out? For instance, when the Democrats figure out who their candidate is, let's come back to this and see what happened.

    Just my opinion.

Three weeks later, the Iraqi government and the Iraqi military seem to be prevailing in Basra, and life seems to be improving there.

For those who look for the Iraqi government and military to step up, this is an encouraging sign.

Others may have to adjust their long-held preconceived notions of quagmire and hopelessness.
