Larry Bradley's Weekly Ezine #12

1. “The Secret” Applied to Politics

In his classic book Think and Grow Rich, Napoleon Hill talks about the necessity of developing a Mastermind group to help the individual achieve success. One of the kindred minds in my own mastermind group is Gene McNaughton with OneCoach. When Gene recommends something, I pay attention.

In our last conversation, Gene recommended I look at the movie version of The Secret. I was aware of the phenomenon created by The Secret and had browsed the book in stores, but I had not looked at it in detail. As usual, Gene’s recommendation was just in time to give me an insight I think is useful to all of us.

The core of The Secret is the application of the Law of Attraction. Whatever you want and think about (and the way you think about it) is attracted into your life. So if you think about why your life is not going well and why you don’t have enough money, then you will discover more ways for your life not to go well and to not have enough money. This is all a function of the questions you ask yourself.

So, here’s what you discover when you think about how The Secret applies to politics. Could it be that we have the kind of nasty, dysfunctional politics we have because we attract it? If we think about conflict and dysfunction, then aren’t we going to get more conflict and dysfunction? As someone just commented from the Bible with regard to one of the entries in my Blog, as you sow, so shall you reap.

So, a new revelation for me is this. What I am trying to do is help people apply The Secret to politics as a means of bettering their political lives as citizens and voters.

Understand this; politics will always involve conflict. Whenever you have people seeking to achieve different purposes on the same topic there will be conflict. The difference can be how we seek to reconcile those different purposes. Rather than seeking to demonize a point of view, we should first seek to understand that point of view and then get the other side to try to understand our own (to paraphrase Covey).

Reorienting to this approach will not be easy. The news media knows that negativity sells and drives ratings and thereby leads us to what we don’t want. Political zealots love wallowing in negativity.

The other side of the coin is that circumstances are such that people are more interested in finding solutions than ever before. The number of people who declare themselves Independents because they are disgusted by both Democrats and Republicans has become a larger number than those within either party.

So hang in there with me and let’s see if we can turn things around.

2. A Reminder of Larry’s May 6 Event

Let me repeat what I said yesterday to a group I had lunch with. I don’t care where you see yourself on the political spectrum or what label you use to describe yourself politically. The fact is that the system we are using is not working. The fault doesn’t lie with any one group, the fault lies with the system as a whole. If our system was working, then would we be $9 Trillion in debt, stuck in a war we don’t seem to have a way to win or get out of, and unable to resolve issues like crumbling infrastructure or illegal immigration? If our system isn’t working, then we need to find out what isn’t working and fix it.

If you are interested in seeing our system fixed, then you need to learn to think in ways you are not thinking now. Let me help you and your friends and family in having that achievement.

I will be speaking on topics like the ones above at what I’m calling a citizen’s discussion on Tuesday, May 6, 2008 at UNO’s Thompson Alumni Center, 6705 Dodge Street in Omaha at 7 p.m.

If you would like to attend, then please take advantage of the reduced admission offer by signing up via my web site at www.KindredMindsEnt.com. I hope to see you there.

For those of you at a distance, I plan to offer Teleseminars soon.
