David Brooks: Demography Is King
David Brooks writes from the "conservative" point of view for the NY Times. This article analyzes the Primary results within the Democratic Party. Both candidates are Ivy League educated, super intelligent attorneys and politicians. Why is it that one of those candidates is predominately favored by the more highly educated members of the Party and the other candidate is favored by the less educated members of the Party?
If you assume that the less populated, less educated parts of the country voting for one of the candidates are also less prosperous, then something I read yesterday by Brian Tracy may apply. Those who are more prosperous, says Tracy, see their actions and their lives in a longer time perspective. They are better able to deny themselves pleasure now for the prospect of a greater reward in the future.
So it is that the short term benefit of a gas tax holiday might have appeal to one group, but not to another.
Will these two groups come together in the Fall for the Democrats? Like an old time Saturday Matinee Serial, that is the question keeping us coming back for more.
