Hal Holbrook as Mark Twain

Hal Holbrook was in Omaha last night to do his one man play, Mark Twain Tonight. What a totally unique and delightful experience!

For those of you who have never traveled to Twain/Clemens' hometown of Hannibal, MO, I strongly recommend it. It's about an hour north of St. Louis on the Missisippi.

Holbrook's performance reminded me of the saying of another Missourian, Harry Truman. Harry used to say there is nothing new in the world, there is only all the history you don't know.

That's because Holbrook's play is based around what Twain was saying in 1905 as a retrospective on his life. His commentary on political parties, Congress and religion are as appropriate today as they were at the time. The quotes came so fast and furious, I couldn't capture them all.

Here is one I especially like.

The trouble with the world is not that people know too little, but that they know so many things that ain't so.
-- Mark Twain
