MSNBC: Dobson Accuses Obama of 'Distorting' Bible
But as Obama himself says in his speech, "Even if we did have only Christians in our midst, if we expelled every non-Christian from the United States of America, whose Christianity would we teach in the schools?" Obama said. "Would we go with James Dobson's or Al Sharpton's?" referring to the civil rights leader."
I say again what I have always said. You are free to hold whatever religious view you want (so long as you're not breaking any laws) and persuade me that your religious views are superior. You are not free to hijack the political process and mandate your religious views through legislation.

Hi. I'm moving my comments over from another thread to this more current one.
Government and Religion, cont.
Obama vs. James Dobson Smackdown
Obama: "Even if we did have only Christians in our midst, if we expelled every non-Christian from the United States of America, whose Christianity would we teach in the schools?" Obama said. "Would we go with James Dobson's or Al Sharpton's?"
Dobson: ""I think he's deliberately distorting the traditional understanding of the Bible to fit his own worldview, his own confused theology... He is dragging biblical understanding through the gutter."
Dobson reserved some of his harshest criticism for Obama's argument that the religiously motivated must frame debates over issues like abortion not just in their own religion's terms but in arguments accessible to all people.

"The Rev. Kirbyjon Caldwell, a Methodist pastor from Texas and longtime supporter of President Bush who has endorsed Obama... launched a Web site to counter Dobson at http://www.jamesdobsondoesntspeakforme.com. The site highlights statements from Obama and Dobson and asks visitors to compare them."
I checked out this new website. It makes some very interesting comparisons.

If they can get you asking the wrong questions, they don’t have to worry about answers. ~ Thomas Pynchon
Religion, illegals, abortion, flag burning, race issues, yada yada yada are all designed to divide. Its important to keep our eye on the ball and not fall for the slight of hand.
Only our individual rights matter and our right to maintain control over their form of government.
Only Governments and criminals use force and lobbyists attempt to use the force of government to legalize what would be criminal were it not done by government. So ADM gets politicians to pass high sugar tariffs to boost the market for corn syrup (which doesn't taste as good). If ADM puts goons on a loading dock to keep sugar out, that would be criminal.
The only answer is keeping our eye on the ball of what use of government is legitimate and what is not. If we decide to feed the hungry, make the best use of competition in the process. Food stamps are valid at any store so their choices are not limited to a government run store. We know government programs because they are written in stone, limit choices and end up with higher costs and lower quality. This is why 'public' education is deteriorating and why we battle over religion in schools. If education is the goal, make the best use of competition. Don't hand out money to districts. Allow all parents to select a school who has written goals and proven results and send the funds to that school. Most would stay in their neighborhood schools but the fact that the parent had other choices would force all schools to compete for students and student outcomes would improve.
