MSNBC: On Abortion, A Subtle Search for Centrist Votes
I see abortion as an issue very similar to Prohibition. We resolved Prohibition by enacting a solution the majority of voters could agree on. The sale and consumption of alcoholic beverages would be allowed in America, but doing things like Driving Under Influence (DUI) would be punishable through our legal and civil courts, especially if those acts results in harm to someone else.
We need a similar approach to abortion. No one I know wants to see an increase in abortions. Isn't the common goal to reduce the number of abortions? Isn't the question how best to do that? The Party devising an answer appealing to non-partisan moderates may well be the Party achieving long term power. This article is about finding that answer. Conversely, the Party unable or willing to find that answer risks long term obscurity.
