Thoughts on the Biden vs. Palin Debate

Eight years ago, the American public voted for someone they could relate to; someone they would like to go out and have a beer with. In the words of Dr. Phil, "How's that working for you?" I don't know about you, but it's not working at all for me.

So, tonight when I watched this debate, I wasn't interested in having a beer with Palin or Biden. I wanted to evaluate which one of them demonstrated the capacity to be President if need be.

That means I am not interested in folksy little stories. I'm interested in the grasp of facts and the vision of policy.

There were no major gaffes by either candidate.

What I saw in Palin was a lightweight who repeated canned answers over and over. I wonder if I could have made a bet in Vegas on how many times she would have used the word "Maverick"? She made false claims which Biden handily refuted, then repeated the claims. That claim she makes about government controlled healthcare is crap. Biden let that go by, but he did an excellent job of pointing out the flaw in McCain's own health care proposal. You will get $5000 to replace a $12,000 policy. That means you have to come up with an additional $7000 on your own, plus you get taxed on it. In addition, can you even get a policy at all if insurance companies are allowed to continue to deny coverage based on pre-existing conditions.

Biden repeatedly showed a mastery of facts, figures and vision. The General he quoted as saying the factors enabling the surge to work in Iraq would not work in Afghanistan is correct. Not only is the quote accurate, but so is the General's assessment.

Let me repeat my offer to the Obama campaign. Call me. Put away this nonsense about the surge once and for all. Let me show you how to do it.

With all respect to those of you who are Republicans, McCain has chosen badly with Palin and that bad choice reflects badly on his judgement.

I listened to Glenn Beck's show today. Beck read a letter from Admiral Stockdale's son about the 1992 debate. The Admiral was, of course, Ross Perot's running mate. My opinion is I have all the respect in the world for the Admiral and his accomplishments, but he was out of his element in that debate. The fact Perot chose the Admiral was a reflection of Perot and his ego which would not allow him to pick someone who was Perot's equal and might upstage him. McCain has made much the same mistake in picking Palin.

I voted Obama in the primary, but here's my take: all hopes rest on Governor Palin at the Vice Presidential Debate, no thanks to Katie Couric and Charlie Gibson. Ms. Palin knocks it out of the ballpark; she delivers. There’s an observation I'd like to make about Democrats though. A faux pas they commit with increased regularity. Now if you don't like Bozo the clown, if you feel that he’s a particularly bad clown and bad for the country, why then don a Bozo wig, a pair of size 14 shoes, and a rubber nose whenever denouncing Bozo?

If there’s an official uniform of the president, it's the pastel blue tie, white shirt, and dark suit popularized by George W. Bush. The color scheme comes from the presidential flag. No other American president made those colors his signature style before George W. Bush. In 2004, Bill Clinton even had his presidential portrait painted wearing George W's distinctive garb. Although the 1960 Kennedy vs. Nixon debate was televised in black & white, people still argue the significance blue vs. grey played during the election.

But there remains no ambiguity about which candidate wore what color (Kennedy, blue). Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. And, the fashion police have long memories. Ms. Palin dressed for and aced the debate. Note: before castigating Bozo, please try not to emulate Bozo. It makes one look like a clown. Unlike foppish Al Gore, Joe Biden and others, we must not allow our inner bozos to dictate our thoughts and actions, much less our mode of dress: http://theseedsof9-11.com
