Ignoring "That One"

Busy day today. I went to a local Congressional candidate debate last night, which I write about tomorrrow. I recorded the McCain Obama debate and watched part of it this afternoon before I went to tape Real Spit.

We had a good session. The shows will be out the 22d and 29th of Oct.

So far McCain has exhibited some weird behavior the last couple of debates. In the first one, he refused to look at Obama when Obama was speaking to him. Last night, he called Obama, "That one." Here's my take on this.

What McCain is doing is not racist. Obama is a threat to McCain's self esteem. Obama is a young man who is threatening to defeat McCain. To protect his self esteem, McCain needs to be able to think of Obama as a thing, not as an individual. By doing so, McCain steels himself to the challenge he faces. If McCain allows himself to think of Obama as an individual, then he must allow himself to fully consider the ideas and postions of Obama and face the possiblility that Obama's ideas are superior to his own.

To avoid that reality, McCain thinks of Obama as a thing that must be defeated.

Just some musings, based on some other teachings I have had.
