Andrew Sullivan: The Top Ten Reasons Conservatives Should Vote for Obama

Andrew Sullivan's article expands on some thoughts I've been having lately. Allow me to add a couple of those thoughts. I really do feel sorry for what I call Traditional Republicans in this election. (They're the ones Limbaugh sneers at and calls "Country Club Republicans".) Traditional Republicans are the ones who believed in intelligent moderation, small government, low spending coupled with low taxes. Unfortunately, they've gotten mixed in with a couple of groups who have perverted the original intent of the party.

Traditional Republicans are between a rock and a hard place. The rock is realizing how badly the Party has performed in governing and how they don't really deserve to be elected.

The hard place is contemplating voting for their sworn enemies, the Democrats. Could they vote for one of the Third Parties? Yes, but they know that to be a futile act of defiance unlikely to result in victory, even if the Third Party aligns itself with their old traditional values.

In many ways, Traditional Republicans face the choices an abused spouse faces in an abusive marriage. Do they stay in hopes their spouse will change and stop beating them? Or do they face the reality their spouse is never going to change until they're forced to and leave.

As with most situations of this type, seeing the best option is much easier for someone outside the situation than for the individual actually involved.

If you're one of these Traditional Republicans, you have one of three options. Vote for McCain, vote for Obama or vote for a Third Party. Whichever you choose, I hope this will cause you to seriously consider joining me in advocating the institution of Instant Runoff Voting. If you had Instant Runoff Voting, then you could be voting for a third party with a solid chance your switch might result in a winning candidate. As it is, you're stuck between a rock and a hard place.
