Ross Douthat: Abortion Politics Didn't Doom GOP

Abortion is one of the three latter day equivalents of Prohibition we need to resolve as a means of overcoming polarized politics. We need to come to the same sort of solution we did for Prohibition. Here's what I mean.

There are still people today who are opposed to drinking, but we have reached a compromise. Production and consumption of alcoholic beverages is allowed. Those who consume to excess and risk injury to others by driving under the influence will be subject and are caught doing so will be punished. As a result, this issue is no longer a factor in our elections.

This article offers some discussion as to why finding that solution is so difficult.
