Jon Stewart Interviews Mike Huckabee

Jon Stewart had Mike Huckabee on The Daily Show last night to talk about Huckabee's book, Do the Right Thing.

Personally, I think Huckabee would have been a much more formidable Vice Presidential candidate than Palin.  The interview has two parts. My link is to the second part where the topic is social conservatism and gay marriage. By coincidence, I was having a discussion of the same topic at lunch yesterday. This is one of the most substantive, yet respectful exchanges on the topic I have ever seen.

Please watch this clip and then respond to the question after the link.

Here's the link.

The arguments I hear most often about why gay marriage should not be allowed are (1) gays are forcing their agenda on me and (2) allowing gay marriage is demeaning to heterosexual marriage.

For those of you opposed to gay marriage, why do you feel this way? Or, if you have other reasons for your opposition, please enumerate them.

For those of you unopposed to gay marriage who have heard these arguments, what are the justifications you have heard for these arguments?

Thanks for your help.

    Larry,

I think this is an excellent post. The vidio shows two people presenting opposing views in a respectful way.

This was particularly refreshing because what passes for discussion is often not respectful and often merely argues one side.

In addition to the two reasons you suggest to oppose gay marriage, Huckabee says that marriage has been defined as between one man and one woman for over 5000 years. He suggests traditional reasons and anatomical reasons. He asserts that in the recent elections, 68% of voters reaffirmed traditional marriage.

With that in mind, it seems that a large majority of Americans support traditional marriage, and gay marriage advocates are trying to overturn this tradition. With that backdrop, I have one question for gay marriage supporters.

That question is "What do you want that you don't already have?"

    With respect.

      Jim,

      Thanks for furthering the discussion.

One example of what gay couples want they don't have is to have their relationship recognized in medical situations whereby family only is allowed into a treatment room.

Allow me to rephrase your own question. What is being taken from those who oppose gay marriage by allowing gays what they want? How are  those who oppose gay marriage being injured by allowing gays what they want?

At one time, interracial marriage was not allowed. Today the majority of society is accepting of interracial marriage, which is now legal. Don't we have much the same situation as we had with interracial marriage?

Let me repeat one of my original questions--How is homosexual marriage demeaning to heterosexual marriage?
