Sam Hunter's Thoughts on Martin Luther King Day
Sam Hunter has been invited to appear on KFAB in Omaha on Monday, January 19, 2009, which is Martin Luther King Day. Sam was kind enough to share his success with me in his emailed reply to his invitation. I asked Sam if I could publish his reply in my Blog and he agreed. Here are his thoughts for this MLK Day.
When I got your email this afternoon, I read it, and I began to wonder what all of this means, MLK day, Obama's ascension to the White House. Yet at the same time I could not help but think about the rise in murders among blacks in this town. How finally, after all these years, and civil rights marches, Black Panthers, Nation of Islams, Thurgood Marshall, and all the great black trailblazers that blazed the way for Obama, we have a chance to show ourselves and the world that we have truly risen up as a people, and yet we still behave like savages.
Let's look at the numbers. Among men, blacks are 6 times more likely than whites to be admitted to prison during their lives. Among women, 3.6% of blacks and 0.3% of whites will enter prison at least once. This is according to the US Department of Justice. According to The National Institute of Drug Abuse, it is estimated that while 12% of drug users are black, they make up for nearly 50% of all drug possession arrests in the US. As compelling as the drug numbers are, it can be disputed that blacks are targeted more. Still, the prison numbers are staggering. A black man can't deny this, for in the black community, everyone black either has been to prison, or knows multiple black people in the prison system.
The point of all this is, we Blacks still have a long way to go. While Obama is a great start, we have to repair (most importantly) the rift we have with one another. This rift is evident in the amount of black on black crimes and murders that occur, the way that we don't support our own businesses, and here is the biggest: The internal secret war that goes on between us.
The war is between Blacks and Niggas. Now, when I say Nigga, it is in a different connotation than one would assume. Niggas don't consider themselves Niggers. Example of a nigga: Rapper 50 Cent, Flava Flav, Comedian Katt Williams. Examples of Blacks: Bryant Gumbel, Wayne Brady, Montel Williams, and Me. Niggas view blacks as Uncle Toms and sellouts.
For myself, growing up, other blacks made fun of me for being good in school, and doing theater and debate, yelling names at me like sellout, and whiteboy as I walked down the halls. Pick a grade, any grade and the same thing occurred. It stopped in college for me. I remember black kids telling me to stick to my color, and bullying me to the point of assault, because I had white friends.
But the whites were the only ones who didn't harass me. They were the ones who let me sleep over, and even saved my life once, keeping my dad from killing me. My dad was a Black Panther in the 60s and 70s, and he hated white people. He called me, a square and a punk for what he said was sleeping with the enemy. Well, I literally did according to him, for all my children are biracial, and I have 4.
My point is my father and I do not get along, nor speak to this day. He disowns me and his grandchildren due to their mixture. I am a better man for it. But this is an all too common story among those blacks who want to succeed, but are afraid to be labeled as white wannabee's and sellouts such as i was called.
Now all this may sound like I dislike my own people, but the truth is, I love being Black. I appreciate the struggle my ancestors went thru, and the strength it gave us. I am just ashamed that MLK's sacrifice and message, as well as the messages of all those great black leaders has been lost and forgotten. If MLK were alive today, I don't think he'd be satisfied just because of Obama. Obama is one man, with at least 4 years. He is NOT going to single handedly change the destiny of black America. Many Americans are feeding into this illusion. It is up to us, to take heed of this good thing, and build on it.
Obama could be a start, but again, this is a marathon and not a sprint. And I don't believe its whites that are the problem for why we can't get ahead. The problem is internal due to all the self hate we harbor. This MLK day, I am going to reflect on all of this, and be proud of where we can go with this, however still vigilant of where we are currently at.
We still have a murder hump to get over. I am afraid most blacks in this city just don't get it. If they did, 76 people in North Omaha would not have died in vain like they did. It's not like the lynching's of old, where many blacks died for the freedoms we enjoy today. These people died for nothing. They died over drugs, unfinished beefs, bystanders to ignorant souls and this is truly shameful. One man cannot fix all that. It's up to us to end this senseless war between Blacks and Niggas.
