Ten years ago this week brought with it the unexpected and untimely death of my first wife. For better or worse, I have some parallels between that event and current events I would like to share with you. I hope doing so will be of help to you in your own life.

I’ll spare you the most gruesome details, but the essentials are this. Carole contacted some sort of virus so powerful it caused her to have a seizure at home. She was taken by ambulance to a hospital on a Tuesday and laid in a coma for 5 days. By Saturday night the brain damage she had sustained in the seizure was causing us to have to thread a very fine needle. Her brain was swelling. If we did not control that swelling then the brain would drop down and kill her. Controlling the swelling, however, reduced brain function. That meant the brain was unable to tell the body to fight the infection.

By dawn Sunday morning the infection had won. Major body organs had shut down and the end came shortly after.

Certainly I am not the only one in this life with such a story. You can always find someone who has an experience more traumatic than your own. The fact is, as I heard Dustin Hoffman say once, we are not living on this planet together. We are dying on this planet together. That reality is one of the reasons we need to be searching more for what can agree on, rather than disagreeing.
