More Political Prejudice
Last week I pointed out how you’re likely being manipulated politically without being aware you’re being manipulated. This week I want to fill in some of the details omitted due to space limitations.
First, let’s consider a related question. Why is this topic important? Well, is the fact you’ve lost a considerable amount of your wealth in your 401k and/or IRA important to you? Have you lost your job or are you worried about keeping the one you have in this environment? If you’re a business owner, are you worried about the survival of your business in this situation? Given the probable answers to those questions are yes, shouldn’t questions like the following be asked? What happened to create this environment? How did it happen? What were the causes? What can be done to eliminate those causes and keep this from happening again?
The natural inclination in this environment is to look for a culprit to blame. In this case, there are many culprits and each passing week brings new understanding of those culprits and their role. The ultimate culprit has yet to reach the national consciousness. The ultimate culprit is the polarized politics that has infected our government and keeps it from functioning as it should. A key enabler of polarized politics is Americans’ vulnerability to political manipulation. I’m writing about reducing that vulnerability.
The difficulty some people have in accepting their vulnerability to manipulation continues to amaze me. They will easily recognize criticism of the other side of an argument (the side they argue for), but they can’t see it in themselves.
My thought is the reason people have this difficulty is the narrowness of their human experience. Consider the thought pattern of the two countervailing arguments.
To repeat from last week, here is Argument/Attitude #1, “. . . You think a political party has found their path to power by taking what you have worked long and hard for and giving it to people who do not deserve it.” Now here is Argument/Attitude #2, “. . . The membership of one of the political parties is made up of greedy and selfish rich people who intend to impose economic slavery on everyone else.”
This is not to say the people described above do not exist. Are there lazy, stupid people out there who would vote for a candidate or party because those people were hoping for something for nothing? Absolutely, but I do not believe they are a majority. Are there greedy selfish rich people who intend to keep all the profit for themselves? Absolutely, but I do not believe they are a majority, even among the rich themselves. Further, the fact is all us as humans are greedy and want the most we can get for the least we can give.
Discussing these points leads to this clarification. Should . . .
