Ever heard the expression, "Let’s run it up the flagpole and see who salutes?" Or maybe you heard it as, "Let’s run it up the flagpole and see who shoots at it." This last week saw something run up the flagpole and the something barely having enough left over from the shooting to make bringing it back down the flagpole worthwhile.

Before I tell you what that something was, I have to tell you how much the event reminds me of a book I read years ago. I don’t remember the name of the book or the author, but I remember the story. The book has a Southern state Governor approached by a Black group during the early days after the passage of the Civil Rights legislation. A state run facility for the destitute elderly and infirm (whose residents are both Black and White) employs only White nurses. The Black group wants Black nurses hired. The Governor assures the group he will get Black nurses hired, but says he will do it in his own way. The Governor then visits the facility. The Governor proceeds to throw a temper tantrum over the fact White women nurses are caring for Black residents. In short order, Black nurses are hired to work at the facility.

This past week, the Obama Administration proposed part of the cost of care for Veterans who are part of the Veterans’ Administration (VA) care process should be picked up by private insurance. The hue and cry was loud and immediate. The American Legion took the lead and other veterans organization quickly joined in.

Those groups asserted (rightly in this writer’s opinion) the belief a government and nation who sends its citizens into harm’s way. . .
