I’ll ask this question now, approximately one week after the so-called Tea Parties and I’ll ask it again at some appropriate time in the future. What did those events accomplish, other than to provide a rallying point for those upset Obama won?
I was going through some old papers last week and came across a booklet noting the stages of grief and loss. The stages were shock and numbness, suffering and disorganization and reorganization. Those who opposed Obama appear to be in the reorganization stage now with the Tea Parties providing an opportunity to express where they are emotionally.
Now, to those upset Obama won, you will (believe it or not) find some empathy from those on the other side. Those upset Obama won are saying, "How in the world could this man have been elected?" (Actually, as you doubtless understand, I’m cleaning up the question for public consumption here from other expletive-laced ways the question is more commonly expressed.) The reason empathy exists is many people were asking the same question four years ago about George W. Bush.
One difference was four years ago the election was much closer and significant evidence existed of electoral shenanigans in places like Ohio and New Mexico. This time the results were much clearer.
In the aftermath of the 2008 election, Republican supporters seem to have suddenly discovered (horror of horrors) our nation has been on a spending spree and is in significant debt. Excuse me, folks, but where were you from 2001 to 2008?
