Given recent politically motivated shootings around the country, I had thought about writing on this topic myself, but Paul Krugman makes many of the same points I would have made. I’m therefore going to make some supplementary remarks and refer you to Krugman’s article.
Krugman refers to an April Department of Homeland Security Report warning of the potential for domestic extremist violence. Krugman reminds us the report was criticized for pointing out some returning soldiers might be in an unstable state of mind. Such soldiers might be vulnerable to committing violent acts. Krugman does not mention, (but I will) we then on May 12 have a soldier overcoming his armed guard in Iraq and walking back into a building to kill 5 soldiers. We have Fort Campbell, Kentucky being shut down for a day May 27, 2009 in the aftermath of soldier suicides. As Krugman points out, the reality of these and other incidents makes the report seem "prescient."
But soldiers are not the "freaks" I’m referring to. I’m referring to the shooters in Kansas, Arkansas and WADC in the last few weeks, their acts of "domestic extremist violence" and the others like them whose ranks they spring from.
Consider the recent shooting of two soldiers at a recruiting station in Little Rock, AR. The shooter there was motivated by concern for the killing of Muslims in Iraq and Afghanistan. In fairness, the capacity for violent acts exists on both extremes of the political spectrum. The economic turbulence we’re experiencing only aggravates its potential.
What is probably even more disturbing about the shootings in Arkansas, Kansas and WADC is the . . .
