Jeremy Scahill: Funding Obama's War
I saw Jeremy Scahill about two weeks ago on Bill Moyers' Journal and intended to point it out at the time. In fact, I'll try to add the link and include it here.
Scahill is upset about how Obama is continuing the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. I appreciate the information Scahill presents about the continuing construction in Iraq and Afghanistan. Apparently, we are constructing the replacement for Guantanamo in Afghanistan. That worries me more than transferring prisoners to American prisons. Can we count on Afghan jailers to not allow these people to escape?
The reality here we need to acknowledge is we are corkscrewed into a situation that is very difficult to extricate ourselves from. We may have to drive ourselves in deeper temporarily in order to be at a point we can begin withdrawal.
As always, I continue to argue the obvious. If we had a lottery draft instead of hiring more mercenaries, then we would be making entirely different decisions. The use of armed contractors (mercenaries) is a horribly ill advised precendent.
Take a read and tell me what you think.
