Wanted: Competitive Political Parties

Your Mission for Independence Day

The mission I ask you to complete this Independence Day weekend is the same one I’ve suggested for the last few years. Take a few minutes to re-read at least the Declaration of Independence. To me, this is the same thing as periodically rotating your tires and checking the alignment of your wheels on your car. This is the same thing as changing the batteries in your smoke detectors when we go back and forth from Daylight Savings Time. This is a renewal you need as an American. If you don’t have a hard copy where you are (surely you have one in your home, don’t you?) then here is a link to read it on the web.

Have a great weekend, everyone.

Wanted: Competitive Political Parties

Last week I highlighted a phenomenon which I’m sure was confounding to those who call themselves conservative politically. Rather than moving to the extreme left, the Democratic Party has actually moved to the center. The most radical leftists in the Democratic membership are apparently feeling abandoned.

In a complex multi-level game of tic-tac-toe, the Democratic Party has put X’s in a whole lot of center boxes and has the potential (if their policies work) of becoming the dominant force in American politics for a long time to come.

As a result, the Republican Party may be in danger of becoming insignificant. I don’t think this is a good thing, but probably not for the reasons you may cite (especially if you’re a Republican). In fact, I don’t want there to be less competitive political parties, I want there to be more of them. That’s one of the reasons I advocate things like Instant Runoff Voting.

Here is why I do not think the fading of the Republican Party would be a good thing.

This is an old saying, but its truth is undeniable. Power corrupts, and . . .
