Outrage over Coverage of Michael Jackson's Death

This morning I watched an editorial on CBS' Sunday Morning new show decrying the amount of coverage given to the death of Michael Jackson compared to the coverage given her nephew, a US Army Infantry Lieutenant killed in Iraq recently.

This evening Carol Blood, a friend of mine here in Nebraska and a member of the Bellevue City Council, posted a similar thought about someone killed in Afghanistan the same day Michael Jackson died.

With no disrespect intended for anyone, thanks for joining in the outrage. Mine has been going on for the last 8 plus years. I didn't need Michael Jackson to die to know about the lack of interest in general in Americans.

And why should we be surprised? Only one half of one percent of all Americans wear a uniform. The majority of the rest of the population knows it is not at risk to go fight or have someone they love go to fight. Therefore, they are more interested in American Idol or Dancing with the Stars.

This is why we desparately need to reinstate the Lottery Draft. Those of you who've read my book know I go into this in detail.

My condolences to the families who are bereaved and mourning loss--including the family of Michael Jackson.

Carol is one of the greatest people I've met since I got active in local politics... and you're both right.

I don't think we need a draft of any kind right now, I think the issue is more cultural. If news sources care more about money than on hard news, then they'll report on weird famous people more than heroes who sacrifice their lives everyday. It takes two to tango though, and the news sources only do so because people don't want to watch another story on the latest father who left behind a family by dying in Iraq or Afghanistan.
