1. By the Way—There’s Still a War Going On

With all the other controversies and issues seeming to consume us, I’ve decided to do something today to remind us all there’s still a war going on.

I have a number of military related sites listed as favorites on my Blog at TheCenterStrikesBack.com. I recommend all of them. I reviewed them for this section and want to especially recommend today The Quaker’s Colonel site (http://quakerscolonel.blogspot.com/), as well as the Vote Vets Blog at (http://www.vetvoice.com/) .

2. How Many Times Have You Gone?

The Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Admiral Mullen, was in Afghanistan recently and held a meeting with recently deployed soldiers and marines. The official term for being stationed overseas is being deployed. The common term military people use to describe the phenomenon is "tour", as in "I did two tours in Vietnam/Iraq/etc."

According to the news report I read, Mullen asked people to hold up their hands if this was their first tour. Several hands went up. Mullen asked for hands for the second tour. Even more hands went up. Mullen repeated the request for third, fourth, and fifth tours. He was still getting hands up. Finally, Mullen asked for a sixth tour and only got one hand. Mullen asked that individual to step forward so he could shake his hand.

I don’t know what your reaction was reading this, but mine was a mixture of admiration and "What the hell are we doing?" Here’s why.

We are a nation of over 300 Million. Among that number are those who are too young and too old to fight. There are also those who are physically, mentally and emotionally incapable of being in the ranks. Even so, straight logic would seem to offer the conclusion . . .

I have been one of many involved in the ongoing discussion of something like, Why does America lose all its wars, or words to that effect. Saw your recent entry and thus checked your Blog and like very much what you said about our continuing to return troops to war zones during the current joke we call a war in Iraq and Afghanistan. It must be stopped, even Viet Nam had limits!

Thanks very much for your comment.

Please contact me at author@kindredmindsent.com if you would like the complete Ezine.

For those of you wondering about the discussion group he writes about--

To find the discussion group, go to Amazon.com and look for my book, Neither Liberal Nor Conservative Be. Scroll down towards the bottom of the page and you should see the Discussion Group (among others) Why America Loses War After War. I've tried before to show a link and it doesn't seem to work.
