1. Announcements, Media and Otherwise
On Thursday, Nov 19th, I was on the air with Money Matters Radio. They broadcast at 1120 AM in Boston and 1390 AM in Cape Cod. Scottie McCall is the host. Scottie wants to have me back on this coming Monday, November 23. Watch my blog. I’ll post the specific time when we work it out for the afternoon (Probably either 3 or 4 0’clock CST). You can listen live via the web at this link. www.moneymattersradio.net/
I continue to co-host Car Concerns from 8-10 a.m. CST Tuesdays and Thursdays. This Tuesday, our guest in the 9:00 hour will be Dr. James K. Galbraith, author of The Predator State: How Conservatives Abandoned the Free Market and Why Liberals Should, Too. One of my favorite sayings is, "What you do speaks so loud I cannot hear what you say." Galbraith’s book is full of examples of politicians saying one thing and doing another. Should be fun.
Of course, I continue to be a panelist on Your City Tonight with Sam Hunter. You can see the program in Omaha on Cox Channel 109 Wednesdays at 9:00 p.m.
Finally, I want to wish one and all a Happy Thanksgiving. May your day provide you all the blessings you hope for.
2. A Review of "Come Home, America"
Today I’m offering a review of Come Home, America: The Rise and Fall (And Redeeming Promise) of Our Country by William Greider
This book describes our country’s approaches to politics, economics and international relations since World War II. The book does an excellent job of summarizing what we thought, what we did, why we did it and where the results leave us now.
While he does not refer to himself this way, I found Mr. Greider to be a fellow resister of the Abilene Paradox, because he speaks of things others are afraid to speak of for fear of being seen as out of step. The paradox is how many other people share your concerns, but are unwilling to speak up themselves and waiting for someone else to speak up first.
For example, the book begins by describing 5 taboos our political elite won’t talk about. They are as follows:
1. Globalization’s net negative consequences to our country.
2. Militarism and its dominance of US foreign policy.
3. The triumph of the free market ideology and its destruction of an equitable society.
4. The ecological crisis and the coming scarcity of oil.
5. Our decayed democracy and the paralysis of reform.
Greider writes well with evocative phrasing (zingers). In discussing some of the approaches we seem to take towards our problems, Greider notes, "When official America talks of "bipartisan compromise," it usually means the people are about to get screwed."
Based on a phrase from a speech by Martin Luther King, Greider wants America to "come home," and replace its priority on problems of the world and its economy with . . .
