Alabama Democrat switches to Republican Party

The NY Times has an in depth article about the Alabama Congressman who recently switched from the Democratic to the Republican Party.

Here's a question to ponder. How many elected officials would switch to a third party emphasizing pragmatism and intelligent analysis if that third party were competitive at the polls?
