Excellent article by Jill Lawrence, IMHO.

Jill points out the most common reasons people express for opposing Health Care Reform, such as its a Government Takeover of Health Care, or its Socialism are simply false.

If you want to oppose the bill, fine, but please do so factually.

At the core, what this controversy is about is this. If Obama and the Democrats succeed in demonstrating government has a legitimate role in making people's lives better through legislation, then it sets back the arguments of Conservatives some 45 years and undoes the premise of the Reagan Revolution. That premise is that government is not the friend of the people, it is the enemy of the people.

If that demonstration can be made, then Conservatives would find themeelves as a permanent minority. Hence, the kamikaze opposition.
