Last week I began an effort to look at the point of view of opponents of the Health Care Reform proposal by drawing parallels with the 2005 effort to privatize Social Security.
As I wrote last week, "Once again, the instincts of the people have been activated in a negative way. People are naturally suspicious of change. They fear much less the devil they do know in comparison to the devil they don’t know. Many in the population are comfortable in what they have. Why is it they are being asked to change what they have? Will that change result in them having less tomorrow than they do today? Or are people being distracted by the process of making the legislation? And is that distraction causing them to reject something that would actually be good for them?"
Let’s explore these questions.
Many in the population are comfortable in what they have. Why is it they are being asked to change what they have? People are being asked to change because the system we have now is bankrupting us individually as consumers and collectively as a nation. We are paying more and more in premiums for less and less service.
In addition, the model we are using whereby insurance is provided by employers is on its way to obsolescence. Employers used to be able to get good rates for health insurance because of the buying power of representing a pool of people. Employers no longer have that leverage.
Further, more and more Americans ineligible for Medicare find themselves either . . .
