Comment about Weekly Ezine #203 from JR Cassady

Here's a comment I received by email from JR Cassady.

Good comments. Don’t forget the “fear factor” in protracted wars.  I remember patrolling into a friendly yard village in II corps where the villagers were keen on helping us with info about the NVA.  We followed the info up and had a couple of short fire fights then circled the wagons and headed back to the SF camp. Later when going back through the same village they were very cool to us.  We had no way or force to secure them. After we left the AO the NVA came back, tortured the chief in front of the people and abducted some young people as porters. We did try to rescue their kidnapped, but never could track them down. So, as you indicated, if you can’t secure the population from the cancer of the insurgents (radical Islamists) you are probably pissing in the wind.
I say we need a draft system. and the National will to fight a war to WIN it.
Keep up the good work.
Cass

From the reports coming in from Afghanistan, the war effort over there has in fact borne great fruit the last year or so. Local militias and government forces don't have as much of a problem with insurgents after the sustained onslaught. Al Qaeda and the Taliban have been severely weakened.

Yes, we have done better over the last year. Why? Because we finally began to put enough troop strength on the ground to both secure the population and interdict the insurgency's operations. The difficulty is even the modest increase (although it may seem massive to some) is inadequate. Worse, we're about to leave before the job is done. We should not get involved in efforts like these if we are not willing to put in the effort and see the task through.
